Anne Zelenka wrote an excellent article in the Web Worker Daily about fostering successful virtual teams. Zelanka came up with seven key traits that successful virtual teams demonstrate:


  • Management demonstrates a thoroughgoing commitment to virtual work

  • Team members communicate regularly by phone

  • Team members check in with each other frequently throughout the work day

  • The team shares a view of their work

  • The team leverages the diversity of team members

  • Team members get to know each other on a human level, not just as working robots

  • Trust and respect are assumed, not earned


Adopting these practices are alll valuable approaches to improving the behaviour of online teams.


Another key is to not get bogged down by email. Email often isolates people and becames a large time drain. Try to ensure that project management software or collaborative software is used wherever possible to encourage teamwork.
