Compete

Compete.com was created to organise the clicks users make on the web. Bill Gross's vision was simple: if we all share our clicks, then each of us gets smarter by knowing what's happening across the web.

Today, search engines help us find sites, but they fall short of showing how safe, popular and valuable a site is. Through click-sharing, Compete extends search algorithms by tapping the collective online experiences of millions of people. By sharing our clicks, we create useful new information about the websites we visit that can help us answer questions like:

Is this website safe from spyware and other threats like phishing?
How many people visit this site and how does it compare to other sites?
Are there promotion codes for this site that can save me money?

Compete.com helps you personally benefit from click-sharing. Whether it's protecting you from a dangerous site, profiling each website you visit, or showing you promo codes that will save you money at check out, Compete wants to help create a more trusted, transparent, and valuable Internet.

Compete has developed two excellent metrics for analysing online behaviour:

Where do we spend our time online?
Shows that 20 domains capture 39% of all our time spent online and that myspace and yahoo capture a majority of users time.

The Compete Attention 200™
The Attention 200™ was developed by compete to show the two hundred sites that yield the largest share of users attention on the web. The Attention Index is based on the amount of time U.S. internet users spend across the top one million websites.

These tools provide a fascintating view into the type of websites that capture users attention online.

Boingo Wireless Internet

While trying to work out how we would maintain consistent internet access while traveling around Europe working on our projects, Metis Internet Partners came across Boingo, a global wireless internet company.

As of 25 June 2007, Boingo is offering a global roaming plan for USD $39 per month, which allows users to access more than 100,000 wireless hotspots including airports, hotels and cafes around the world for a flat fee. This is the world’s first truly global flat-rate service. There are no roaming charges and no per-minute fees.

This development follows a recent deal with FON, a community of people making wireless internet access universal and free. Foneros, FON's community members, share some of their home internet connection and get free access to the community’s wireless hotspots worldwide. When integrated into the Boingo network an additional 130,000 wireless hotspots will be available through one account.

In two months the threat of huge bills to access the internet while traveling has become an opportunity to seek out wireless hotspots and trial Boingo's new global roaming package.
