The Aboriginal Art Directory website www.aboriginalartdirectory.com officially launches with over 7,000 artists and 600 vendors and 1000 members, across 12 countries.
The official launch, after 6 months of public trial, will see the creation of a global resource connecting the aboriginal art community and addressing the current online issues for the aboriginal art industry.
The Aboriginal Art Directory’s goal is to increase the ease of buying and selling aboriginal art through the provision of a complete market. The directory allows buyers to shop around to find the best deal, rather than relying on limited advice from vendors.
The website details easy-to-use listings on aboriginal art, allowing buyers and sellers to search by artists, vendor, medium, art region and vendor location. This complete directory creates a simple research tool, connecting the community through the supply of key information, addressing the current online challenges for smaller vendors and government funded vendors.
The value of The Aboriginal Art Directory website has been recognized by industry bodies including The Australian Trade Commission (Austrade). Austrade's Business Development Manager for Creative Arts (Los Angeles), Joel Newman comments: "The Aboriginal Art Directory is a great website for international art buyers. It is comprehensive and simple, providing an excellent tool for buyers when doing their pre-purchase research. This website is a valuable resource for serious aboriginal art buyers".

Elliat Rich is a multi-disciplinary designer based in Alice Springs, Australia. Elliat designs objects, furniture, jewellery and lighting from a conceptual basis, investigating a non-materials based approach to sustainability. Her works have been shown nationally and internationally. The website covers her projects; past, present and future, news, publications, bio and more.
From the launch:
The site covers a number of different aspects of, well, me. Primarily, it's a place to see my design work; from breath responsive garments to water reactive lights, from tea making apparatus to street living foldable shelters. There's also a few pages of where I've been up until now (including a photo of me playing the Millennium Falcon in a school play circa '84 - you saw it here first!) The site has, what will be, an ongoing News section (currently in it's infancy), the obligatory contact details page as well as a few other hidden treasures, including my brand new shiny CREST! - that I hope you enjoy. So now without further ado...
Da da da daaaaa (metaphorical ribbon gets cut)
This website is live."
Before you finish having a look, I'd like to invite you to subscribe to the site - simply enter your email in the box on the top right hand corner - you'll see it . Your free subscription will get you the occasional email about what 'exciting, dastardly (me?! Never) and adventurous' things I've been up to. 2008 is set to be a big one.

You are invited to the launch of Yala Sofa.
Yala is a furniture piece that blossoms in the company of others.
Based on the concept of Ipomoea; a plant that grows throughout the central deserts of Australia, the Yala Sofa provides an inspiring space for people to come together.
The Ipomoea plant, otherwise known as Bush Potato or Yala by Pintupi people, provides a rich source of bush food for those who live in harsh conditions in the central desert. A potato-like tuber grows in the roots of the plant, and digging these up is an opportunity for socialising.

Hill, who has invoked such descriptions as ʻan exemplar of the urban blackʼ*, likes to push boundaries with his often-political work.

Over 7,000 visitors a month to new website
4 September 2008: The Aboriginal Art News website www.aboriginalartnews.com.au officially launches this month with over 1,200 articles, events and listings. The official launch of this website sees the creation of a global resource connecting the Aboriginal art community and providing the first online news service dedicated to Aboriginal art.
Aboriginal Art News is published by Metis Internet Partners, who also publish The Aboriginal Art Directory. Collectively these two websites see over 24,000 visitors a month, researching and sourcing Aboriginal art information.
Metis Internet Partners created these websites to help buyers with their pre-purchase research, whilst also helping galleries and art centres increase their exposure online.
The website includes articles events and stories that cover the Aboriginal art industry. It will also feature painting reviews written by Adrian Newstead, one of Australia's most senior Aboriginal art consultants, and formerly the Managing Director for Menzies Art Brands. Newstead will author artwork reviews of artworks by Australian's 200 highest selling and most successful Aboriginal artists.
Chief Executive Officer of Metis Internet Partners, Kathryn Riley says: "We are very excited about the launch of Aboriginal Art News. We believe this news resource will not only increase exposure for Aboriginal art, but it will become the critical online tool for the industry, increasing the ease and quality of buyer research".
Kathryn adds: "Aboriginal Art News will assist small vendors and art centres with limited resources in the online market. Aboriginal Art News will also assist buyers with their research on vendors so they can make an informed decision when buying art, and support ethical dealers in the industry" Kathryn added.
Aboriginal artist, Nyree Reynolds, is one of the self-represented artists that has personally benefited from the creation of the Aboriginal Art Directory and Aboriginal Art News websites.
Nyree comments: "These websites have increased the number of people who have bought my artwork - only last week a Gallery contacted me with a view to purchasing my work for sale, not on a consignment basis , which is very encouraging indeed, and a most unique experience"

Background
Aboriginal Art News is a Metis Internet Partners Website.
After working with over 40 remote Aboriginal art centres in Central Australia for a year, Metis Internet Partners realised that the market for Aboriginal art centre's was limited. Although many art centres have an online presence, and the internet is a good tool for this remote industry, there are many factors limiting the success, including: the nature of the Aboriginal names, the markets unfamiliarity with art centres, the transient nature of the artists, and the relationship between artists and art centres. Aboriginal Art News along with the Aboriginal Art Directory provides the critical link between these artists, art centres, vendors and the buyers of Aboriginal art.
Metis Internet Partners identified the opportunity to improve the quality and visibility of Aboriginal art information online. Speaking to artists, galleries art coordinators and others industry players, and utilizing the group's internet knowledge, Metis developed The Aboriginal Art Directory and Aboriginal Art News, providing solutions for sales, international access, management of artists and artworks.
Established in 1999, Metis Internet Partners began with the goal of expanding and sharing knowledge through new and innovative online services. Metis Internet Partners ideas stem from passion and shared vision and which inspire creativity. Metis Internet Partners develop, create and publish:

Walala Tjapaltjarri, brother of well-known painters Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri and Thomas Tjapaltjarri, was born in the Gibson Desert east of Kiwirrkura in the early 1960’s. He was one of a small party, that included his brothers, several sisters, and two old aunts whose arrival in Kiwirrkura in 1984 made international headlines that proclaimed the discovery of a ‘Lost Tribe’. Until this time, at age 21, Walala had never encountered Europeans and their ways. The group had been following their traditional lifestyle in the country west of Lake Mackay and another brother Pierti, who had traveled with them, returned to the desert almost immediately thereafter.

Josie Petrick Kemarre was born at Santa Teresa Mission, c.1953. and by the time she had begun painting in 1990 she was living in the Eastern Desert region surrounding Utopia.
Based on the native plants of her homeland and her favorite bush tucker species at various stages of their growth, her paintings intimately associated with Women’s Awelye (ceremony/dancing) and Women’s Dreamings are rendered in two quite distinctively different styles. Her aerial depictions of bush tucker Dreamings featuring overlapping dot work entail only a semblance of Aboriginal iconography, while in her Women’s Dreaming’s each row of dots is rendered in a different colour with the inclusion of iconic womens symbols.
