Action Streams

Today, we're shipping the next step in our vision of openness -- the Action Streams plugin -- an amazing new plugin for Movable Type 4.1 that lets you aggregate, control, and share your actions around the web.

Action Streams shows a users actions on the web in most of the common social networks. Everything can be completely customised based on the users preferences.

Movable Type keeps getting better and better as it increases its reach in the open source and social networking communities. At Metis Internet Partners we have been looking at the Movable Type community solution, and this comment from Six Apart really sparked our interest:

There are even cooler possibilities with this new plugin when working with communities. If you power a community with Movable Type and want to aggregate activities of your authors, you can publish a summary of the whole community's activity. We've setup a demonstration of community activity aggregation running on MovableType.org right now. While the plugin today provides action streams for authors within Movable Type, you can imagine the possibilities in the future with all of your users in Movable Type Community Solution.

If you're not already using Movable Type, download it now and give it a try. It's worth it.

Movable Type community solution

Recently I have been looking at the Movable Type community solution. It extends the Movable Type blogging package significantly by adding the opportunity for members of any website to blog, comment or post on a forum.

I have been very impressed with what I have seen so far. It looks like a fantastic opportunity for all sorts of online businesses to continue to expand their engagement with their users in a meaningful way.

Some of the features included in the off the shelf package are:

Member Profiles: Registered members of your community can create and customize profiles

Avatars or User Pictures: Members can upload an image of themselves to identify themselves on their comments, posts and profile

Favoriting, Recommendations and User Voting: Your community can vote for its favorite content, making it easy for your readers and authors to see what’s most popular

User-Contributed Content: Registered users can submit content to your site, and administrators have full control over what gets published

Community Blogs: Exclusive new community blogs designed to allow any site visitor to become a contributor to your blog

Forums: Powerful but simple full-featured forums completely integrated with your blogs, user profiles, and content management

Comment Feeds: Automatic comments feeds for your site and for each topic, blog post and/or profile.

If you would like to know more about the product please contact us.

How blogging is changing the world no. 6543

If anybody needed any further indication that (a) blogging is changing the world and (b) blogging is changing the way US politics is run or (c) that stories about bloggers and blogging changing the world are not going to go away soon, log into the New York Times for the review of the current Obama comment controversy.

I was recently in Dallas at one of those hours when no matter the spin, nobody looks excited about rehashing the days lack of news for the thousandth time. In this case I think that Bill Clinton had earned $89 million over the last seven years according to his tax return. The majority of blogs and posts are just as interesting, but that doesn't stop the odd one from snowballing remarkably.

Anyway Mayhill Fowler recently caused quite a stir with her ruminations on a Barrack Obama fundraiser. Just another example of the power of blogging and the growth of the news media around the world. Just another example of news being broken on a blog.

They say art is a weapon. If thatʼs true, Aboriginal artist Adam Hill has wielded it confidently to carve out a name for himself. The Sydney-based Worimi man is currently preparing for his next solo show at Melbourneʼs Arc1 Gallery in November.

Hill, who has invoked such descriptions as ʻan exemplar of the urban blackʼ*, likes to push boundaries with his often-political work.

Online and pay TV lead Aussie ad spend

Clients' spending on advertising in Australia rose 11.5% in 2007, with online and subscription TV both showing healthy increases.

The Commercial Economic Advisory Service of Australia (CEASA) annual survey of advertising spend showed that total advertising spend topped A$13.2 billion.

While free-to-air TV continued to dominate with an 8.3% jump in spend to $3.5 billion, online advertising was the stand out performer up 34.5% to A$1.35 billion. Subscription TV jumped almost 30% to $275.6 million.

Government and retail advertising was behind the major increase.

In 2007, Australia's federal government was the country's biggest spender on advertising, estimated at between $215 million to $220 million. Retail giant Coles forked out between $170 million to $175 million.

Meeting planner

One of the most essential tools for a virtual organisation is a decent meeting planner.

We are constantly trying to work out the time and time differences between Mexico, Singapore, Melbourne, Alice Springs, the United Kingdom, the United States and even Romania, so it pays to have a tool that facilitates this, especially when trying to organise an international conference call.

Fortunately timeanddate.com has a fantastic international meeting planner.

The planner allows you to pick up to four cities on a certain day. The output screen shows a thirty six hour list broken up into one hour time intervals with the time at each place displayed. The list also shows:

whether a place is observing daylight saving time

whether the time is during the night time or normal sleeping hours

whether the time is during the first half of day when most people are at work

whether the time is during the second half of day when most people are awake but not necessarily at work

Yala Sofa Launch

You are invited to the launch of Yala Sofa.

Yala is a furniture piece that blossoms in the company of others.

Based on the concept of Ipomoea; a plant that grows throughout the central deserts of Australia, the Yala Sofa provides an inspiring space for people to come together.

The Ipomoea plant, otherwise known as Bush Potato or Yala by Pintupi people, provides a rich source of bush food for those who live in harsh conditions in the central desert. A potato-like tuber grows in the roots of the plant, and digging these up is an opportunity for socialising.

The Yala plant flowers after desert rains.
